As summer is well underway here in New Zealand and although we are not able to travel internationally, we are fortunate to live in a beautiful country that we can explore! Just before you say Bon Voyage remember that in a new environment with new experiences you can often be subjected to minor ailments. Rather than allowing ill health to spoil your holiday don’t forget to pack your Homeopathy Travel Kit and nip any ailments quickly and easily in the bud!

Here are just a few common complaints and suggested remedies that Homeopathy can assist the body to respond too. While on holidays – Travellers’ nerves/fear of flying, travel sickness, travelers diarrohea and constipation, food poisoning, hangovers, indigestion, bites and stings, prickly heat, sunburn, heat exhaustion, and cuts and bruises can prove very unpleasant.

While there are many remedies that could be prescribed depending on specific symptoms these are a selection of remedies to consider:

Homeopathy Remedies for Fear of flying

Argentum-nitricum: Very anxious, restless, with diarrohea – “what if the plane crashes”. Worse for heat, crowds, and better for open air.

Aconite: Complete terror and panic and fear of death – “knows the plane will crash”. Feels worse for touch and better for fresh air.

Arsenicum: Restless, cannot bear to be alone, and needs constant reassurance that they will survive the flight. Feels better for the company.

Gelsemium: Trembling with anxiety and panic and muscles feel weak and heavy and refuse to obey your will. Feels worse for exertion, better for sweating.

Nux Vomica: Excessive impatience and anger while kept waiting. Worse for stimulants – coffee, alcohol and feels better in the warmth.

Homeopathy Remedies for Travel Sickness

Also known as motion sickness this is an acute ailment with symptoms of pallor, dizziness, sweating, salivation, nausea, and vomiting. Homeopathy can help people afflicted with travel sickness without the side effects of drowsiness and dryness of the mouth associated with some conventional treatments.

Cocculus Indicus: Excessive fatigue yet feels too tired to sleep. They may also feel weak, nauseous and dizzy, and faint. Usually, the person feels worse in the fresh air and worse for eating and drinking. The person must lie down to prevent vomiting.

Petroleum: Nausea, dizziness, heavy headache, vomiting, cold sweat with a ravenous hunger, the hunger is satiated by small amounts of food. They feel worse in the fresh air and better for eating and lying with the head high.

Tabacum: This is a deathly, intermittent violent nausea with vomiting where the face is pale and drawn with a tight band around the head feeling. They feel worse from the heat and smell of tobacco and feel better in the fresh air.

Homeopathy Remedies for Food Poisoning

Food poisoning is caused by eating contaminated food. The onset of symptoms usually develops within 30 minutes to 48 hours. Symptoms usually include nausea, vomiting, diarrohea, stomach pain, and in severe cases shock and collapse. Stomach bugs look similar but will often be accompanied by a fever.

NB: Seek medical aid from a GP or hospital if there is continued abdominal pain and blood in the stools, there is difficulty focusing, double vision, convulsion, or paralysis. Ensure lost fluids are replaced with a high intake of fluids.

Arsenicum: Bad effects of spoiled fish, meat, and bad water. Burning pain in the abdomen, the person feels chilly, restless, anxious, thirsty for sips of water. Vomiting and diarrohea at the same time. Better for warmth and warm drinks, worse from cold drinks, sight or smell of food.

Lycopodium: Bad effects of shellfish especially oysters.

Pulsatilla: Stomach disorders from eating cakes, fats, rich foods, spoiled meats, and rotten fish.

Urtica Urens: Ailments from eating shellfish with an allergic skin reaction.

Homeopathy Remedies for Prickly Heat

Prickly heat or the prickly sensation is due to inflammation caused by the bursting of sweat gland ducts blocked by sebum. If the symptom is reoccurring and particularly troublesome you should seek constitutional treatment to treat the root of the problem.

Apis mellifica: Skin feels hot with raised, red shiny eruptions that feel worse for the heat and better for cool bathing. Skin feels better for cool bathing. The person may be “touchy”.

Rhus Tox: Burning or itching rash with restlessness and small blisters. Skin feels worse for cold air and better for heat.

Urtica urens: The rash is red with raised blotches that sting, burn and itch – like a stinging nettle rash. Skin feels worse for cold bathing and better for rubbing.

Homeopathy Remedies for Bites and Stings

NB: Seek urgent medical attention if there are any symptoms of difficult breathing, wheezing, palpitations of the heart, there is confusion or faintness or the sting is in the mouth or throat.

Apis mellifica: Rapid swelling that looks red, angry, and shiny with stinging and burning pain. Worse for warmth and better for cold application.

Cantharis: Rapid onset with intense and violent burning pains. Watery blisters may develop. Worse for touch and better for warmth.

Ledum: Skin looks blue, puffy, and feels cold – but feels better for cold application and worse for heat. Causes – stings, thorns, and puncture wounds.

Urtica Urens: Skin is itchy and blotchy and looks like nettle rash.

Bites and stings can be treated internally and externally. Use insect repellent such as Pyrethrum and use a cream to reduce swelling and itching.
