Cold Sores and Homeopathy

Cold sores and Hx top

This is a great article from Lee-Anne at the Healing Haven, she gives us an inside scope on how Homeopathy supports the body’s healing process with cold sores! The dreaded tingle. The tingle that makes you stop what you are doing and pay attention. That sinking feeling as you realize you have a cold sore beginning.

Cold sores are caused by the Herpes simplex virus which likes to make its home in the nervous system. This virus can sit quite dormant in the body. Our immune system can no longer keep this virus inactive when we are under stress. This could be the common cold, work, or emotional upset.

With proper preemptive treatment cold sore won’t develop. However, if the cold sore is already a little advanced, then the correct remedy will support the body to hasten the healing. Each bout of cold sores should get further apart and respond faster with repeated use of the remedy.

There are cases of cold sores in my clinic that can be quite resistant to treatment. In those cases, we use the nosode made from the virus itself. It’s important to mention that before taking a nosode it’s highly recommended you book a constitutional appointment with your local fully qualified homeopath to ensure that a nosode is a correct prescription. This helps support the body to stop the virus in its tracks and strengthens the body so that it doesn’t reoccur. Further on, Lee-Anne shares an example of where she has used the nosode.

If you are a cold sore sufferer, then you might want to have one of the following remedies on hand.

Top 3 Homeopathic Remedies for Cold Sores:

Natrum muriaticum

Do you ever get cold sores from too much sunlight? If so, you might try Nat Mur the next time you get one. It’s a fantastic remedy for cold sores that erupt on the lips after being in the sun. It can have large vesicles on the lower lip which burns. They can develop with numbness and be tingling like the traditional cold sore. The lips may have a tendency to be dry and cracked. There can be a craving for salt.

Nat Mur is also a remedy for the making and breaking of relationships. The person will feel betrayal deeply but will not show anyone how hurt they are. This remedy is for the recent or past grief that is held deep down. We may be having a hard time letting go of someone or something. Nat Mur won’t tend to cry but they will tend to have short bursts of irritability.

If that sounds like you and you get cold sores from too much sun…this remedy might be perfect. It will also help you move through your grief and enhance your ability to move on.

Sepia

This is a great remedy to help balance the estrogen and progesterone in the hormonal woman. If your cold sores tend to appear around your menses then this could be a great remedy for you. You might find yourself becoming very tired, foggy, and irritable before your period. There may even be a feeling of joylessness that accompanies the tiredness. This would be a confirmation of this remedy choice.

The cold sores themselves will tend to be crusty and scabby at their worst. They may also appear around the nose and inside. Sepia has a peculiar symptom where the saddle over the nose looks a little yellow.

Rhus Toxicodendron

This remedy comes from poison ivy. The cold sores that will need this remedy will show up as red, burning, and itching. There may be some neuralgic pain in the face. The glands in the throat may also be slightly swollen. The vesicles may weep a yellow fluid.

A remedy to have in your first aid kits! It is a wonderful remedy for supporting the body in repairing ligaments and tendons. It is also marvelous when a person feels under immense pressure due to deadlines at work or study. Their shoulders may be knotty and tight and they may be very irritable. Rhus tox may feel both restless and stiff on first rising after rest. If you can relate to this then this remedy will be an excellent one to try for your cold sores. It is also used for shingles.

Herpes simplex nosode

Here is an example of how Lee-Anne has used this remedy to stop recurrent attacks of herpetic eruptions. Just as Samuel Hahnemann did, Lee-Anne likes to always experiment with herself as much as possible so she can understand what a remedy does and how it works.

For the past year, she had been getting horrific, painful headaches before her menses and during. She could tell they were neuralgic rather than inflammation. They were always accompanied by tiny, perfectly symmetrical blisters on her face. One or two may appear and they were so innocuous, it took her a while to connect them to the headaches.

Lee-Anne realized this was a recurrent herpetic eruption. Well-indicated remedies were not having a lasting impact on the symptoms. Therefore, she tried the Herpes simplex nosode. After taking the remedy she had an interesting insight. Lee-Anne had been suffering from fullness in her ears and hardness of hearing for some time. She had related this to possible hayfever, was actually the virus active in the nerve pathways in her ears.

Upon taking the remedy the nerve pain became severe for a couple of hours, particularly in her ears. Soon the ears cleared and her hearing became sharper. The fullness was gone. The next day the little vesicles were gone. Whenever the fullness in her ears began to come back, she took another dose. Each time the pain was excruciating in my nerves. Within a short time of the dose, Lee-Anne’s hearing and energy would improve. She could only stand to give herself 3-4 doses of this remedy over a period of a few days. Furthermore, she had no further recurrence of vesicles or neuralgic headaches since!
